A great field of World Championship and Commonwealth Games stars gathered in the global mideast to push World Champ Docus Inzikuru of Uganda toward a new world record. Ann Gaffigan of USA, the designated rabbit, was to pull that field at record pace which she did -- going through the first kilometer in 3:01 despite losing her track shoes and uniform when an airline misplaced her luggage. But Gaffigan was not followed by Inzikuru who scratched due to illness shortly before race day.

By halfway Kiptum and Chepchumba shared the lead though, without Inzikuru or rabbit, they slowed to 6:20 at 2000m. Kiptum pulled away for victory in the third kilometer and MacFarlane passed Chepchumba. Many women decelerated in the later laps and fell short of their previous best times, presumably the result of an early blistering pace plus heat and swirling wind.
