Random Thoughts! (posted on 12/08/06 at 3:33 pm EST, updated on 12/20/06 at 7:43 pm EST) | Wow. Thank God for rest weeks. I'm currently training for the Houston Half Marathon/US Half Marathon Champs in January. I just finished a 3-week cycle of 100 miles a week and I am now enjoying my 60-mile rest week. What a relief!
I returned from the USATF Annual Meetings in Indy on Sunday. I was so mad at myself for not waking up early and running my 20-mile long run, the last run before my rest week began, before going to the airport. Instead I got home to Lincoln, NE, at 5pm. It was already dark and about 20 degrees and dropping. I started at 5:30 and was done at 8. I think I was in a semi-conscious daze the whole way, as it actually went by pretty fast. I was so glad when it was over. On the plus side, I am really starting to feel like a 100 mile week is "normal". It is not a stretch for my body anymore. It is manageable. Man is that a good feeling. I'm chomping at the bit to run that half. 5 1/2 more weeks: the rest of this week is rest, then 3 weeks of 90, 85, 80, with a long-interval workout and a tempo run each week, then 2 weeks of tapering that will include 10K and 5K time trials. I should be feeling pretty sharp by then.
The meeting was great; I'm so glad I went. I proposed a rule change: that they would have to release the heat sheets 24 hours prior to the prelim race time (at the USATF Outdoor Championships), as opposed to 9pm the night before. It passed! Now we will no longer be waiting until late at night before we run to see 1) who is in our heat, 2) which heat we are in, or even 3) if we are running heats at all. It almost passed too easily; I wish I would have pushed for 2 nights before. Maybe next year.
We definitely need more distance runners to attend this meeting. We are under-represented compared to the other events, and there is no excuse!
On Friday night my friend Brooke (who I grew up playing soccer with) and her boyfriend drove up from Louisville and met me in Indy to go see Jim GaFfigan perform at the Murat Theater. He and I are related somehow--our grandpa's are cousins I think. He was hilarious, and we even met him after the show and went out for a bit. He is definitely a Gaffigan; same hair(line) as my Dad, same blue eyes as him, same Gaffigan humor and disposition. Good stuff. If any of you don't know who he is, you're missing out. Download some of his stuff or buy his "Beyond the Pale" DVD of him doing a show in Chicago. The best $10 you'll ever spend. His website is www.jimgaffigan.com.
