Some old pictures and some new thoughts (posted on 01/01/07 at 12:47 pm EST, updated on 01/01/07 at 12:51 pm EST) | I found these pics of Kelly Mac-Strong, Dawn Cromer, and me at the June 3 Music City Distance Carnival at the Univ of Tennessee in Nashville. Thanks to Dave Milner for putting on a prize money meet that has the steeple! Anyway, Dawn (the original producer of the SteepleChics shirts) brought us our orders that day and we immediately slapped on the new shirts and modeled them for the camera. And now onto the new thoughts for the new year! I had a 12-mile time trial on Saturday. Man, that actually sounds as bad as it is! It rained a bit but at least I wasn't running in the blizzard that we were having 24 hours later! I felt pretty strong and was running very even splits until the last 2 miles, when I ran out of steam and slowed down 5 or 6 seconds per mile. Ran right around 72 minutes. Not bad. 3 minutes better than my time trial time 2 years ago when I ended up running 1:17:12 at the same race. I think the running-out-of-steam may have been a result or either not a big enough dinner or too early of a dinner or both (the night before). I ate around 5pm. I wasn't hungry during the run, but I feel like I could have used some more reserves.
The next morning (Sunday) I woke up (at 11:45, yes I'm an amazing sleeper) to almost a foot of snow!! We weren't supposed to get more than a few inches, so this was a surprise. This is the first snow I've had in my new house. I happily bundled up and went out and shoveled my driveway alongside my neighbors doing the same. I was pretty proud of my work but TODAY I am incredibly sore. Apparently I don't have that great of upper body strength, unlike my brother and his wife, who can do pull-ups with their fingers (not kidding). Oh well, I was going to get a massage this week anyway.
This is the start of 2 weeks out from the race, so I'm beginning to taper. I have a 10K time trial on the roads tomorrow (Tuesday) and a 5K time trial on the roads on Saturday. Some easy runs, yoga, and core in between and then a nice easy week next week and I'll be good to go. I haven't been "tapered" in awhile, so I'm looking forward to that feeling.
One more thing: my sister got me Fam's "Run Like Hell" DVD for Christmas and it is pretty good. Definitely motivating, and I am impressed with him for putting it all together so well. I especially liked his music choices for the different scenes. He's a perfect person to make something like this because he can portray not only his successes but also the obstacles he's hit along the way and how he's dealt with him. Because it isn't all flowers and smiles, now is it??
